Sanglap
Sanglap is the art residency programme hosted at Khwaabgaon to initiate a dialogue with the local community through artistic interventions. The artists are expected to create site-specific works/products/prototypes/film that would echo with the spirit of the place and also contributes to the community ethos. As Chalchitra Academy strongly believes in the idea of green and sustainable development, the creative individuals would be encouraged to explore locally available resources which are bio-degradable and environment friendly. Sanglap – Chapter I. Dates: 10th, 11th, & 12th August 2019: The inaugural chapter of Sanglap witnessed three young art graduates of Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan volunteering in the public art project. Upama Chakraborty’s work ‘Lalbazaar to Barabazaar’ transported urban images and cacophony to the village space, interrogating facets of modernity and urbanity. Dipanjan Pal made several environmental sculptures with active participation of the community, and Nitish Kumar came up with a site specific sound installation, using nearly hundred collected and used steel glasses, creating an interactive space, where the work blurred the boundaries between the sacred and the profane. Nitish also engaged with a series of performances. A tree plantation ceremony was also held on 11th August, where the entire village folk planted a sapling each.Chalchitra Academy took the initiative of planting trees under an event titled as “Poha daare debon rohoya: Esho gachh lagay”. Here each and every villager, regardless of their age or gender, planted a tree each and adopted the said saplings as their own children with the promise of looking after them forever. For Chalchitra Academy’s spearhead, artist Mrinal Mandal, himself a native of Jhargram, nature has been a lifelong source of inspiration, devotion, and magic. Thus, for each of the 75 inhabitants there was a living promise and pledge of 75 newly planted Shaal and Palash saplings.
Sanglap – Chapter II. Dates: 4th and 5th February 2020 : The second version of Sanglap was titled ‘Exploring the Margin’ where a two day community based 3D graffiti art workshop was conducted by renowned American graffiti artist Tracy Lee Stum and New Jersey based Indian artist Sayak Mitra. The artists recreated a 3D fish tank with the help of the young participants of the village. The joy of interacting with a 3D illusionistic painting was priceless.
